Class Offerings
Beginning Sewing for Kids 8-11
This class is specifically designed for ages 8-11 with simple, quick projects that will create an interest in sewing. Less attention is paid to the technical instead focusing on creative projects that appeal to this age group.
All supplies and equipment provided.
Beginning Sewing for Teens 12-15
Students will learn the basics of sewing and working from a commercial pattern. They will select a simple pattern to create a garment out of upcycled fabrics chosen from the Textile Mill’s stock or fabric they bring from home. Focus will be on creative construction that reflects the student’s interests to make a unique piece of clothing.

Beginning Sewing for Adults
This class addresses multiple levels of beginning sewing. Whether you have never sewn or would like to prepare for intermediate sewing, this class will allow you to progress at your own speed. Rudimentary skills will be covered, including all aspects of using a sewing machine, understanding fiber content and thread choices, fabric sourcing, proper cutting techniques, basic construction methods, stitching techniques, and seam finishing. Each student will choose two simple projects assigned by the instructor to complete during the course. Students will be given individual attention based on their skill level.

Intermediate Sewing for Adults
This class is designed for individuals who have sewing experience and desire to expand their skills. The instructor will address using and adjusting a commercial pattern, specialty seams, fabric applications, closures, hand finishing, and many other techniques involved in creating a highly finished garment. It will be necessary to purchase a sewing pattern. If special fabric is needed the instructor will assist the student in selecting the material.

Upcycle Creative Sewing
Familiarity with the sewing machine is helpful for this class. Upcycle sewing, refers to altering or combining existing clothing and fabrics to create something new. The idea is to reuse and upcycle clothing to make a new garment or other textile product to be defined by the student. The class will involve hand & machine sewing.
Equipment and basic supplies are included in the course fee. Students are encouraged to bring in article(s) of clothing they would like to alter or use as raw materials. There will also be items provided to fill in the gaps.

Soft (Beginning) Upholstery
Soft (Beginning) Upholstery is an introduction to a furniture upholstery class that will be offered in late spring / early summer 2025.
Each project will encompass skills related to furniture upholstery, including pillows / cushions, small ottomans, curtains / draperies and upholstering a wooden frame to simulate a large piece of furniture.
Only simple sewing skills are needed.

Fabric Painting on Silk & Linen
Students will create two hand-painted pieces. Drawing and / or painting ability is not necessary. Students will learn color mixing, and how to paint with dyes.
Students will learn how to use thickeners and "resists" to create blocked areas of their designs.
